Did you recently meet an Adventist? Maybe you saw an ad for an event at a local Adventist church, or drove by one of the denomination’s schools or hospitals. You may have just heard the word “Adventist” somewhere and want to find more about what it means.
Seventh-day Adventists are a global family of Christians who hold the Bible as the ultimate authority. There are, however, a few distinguishing characteristics that set them apart from many other Christian denominations.
Let’s look at a few core components of their collective identity, which can give you an idea of what it means to be a Seventh-day Adventist.
Seventh-day Adventist beliefs are meant to permeate your whole life. Growing out of scriptures that paint a compelling portrait of God, you are invited to explore, experience and know the One who desires to make us whole.
Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as their only creed and hold certain FUNDAMENTAL BELIEFS to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. These beliefs, as set forth in the church's Statement of 27 Fundamental Beliefs, constitute the church’s understanding and expression of the teaching of Scripture. Revision of these statements may be expected at a General Conference Session when the church is led by the Holy Spirit to a fuller understanding of Bible truth or finds better language in which to express the teachings of God’s Holy Word.
The fourth commandment of God’s unchangeable law requires the observance of this seventh-day Sabbath as the day of rest, worship, and ministry in harmony with the teaching and practice of Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath
There is confusion in the world about what happens when people die. For many, death is shrouded in mystery and evokes dread, uncertainty, and hopelessness. Others believe that their deceased loved ones are not dead at all, but instead live with them or in other realms.
Baptism is a sign that we are humbling ourselves, obeying God, and having our sins washed away. But what did Jesus mean by that statement to Nicodemus – “You must be born again?”. What does it mean to be born of the Spirit?
Adventists believe the key to wellness lies in a life of balance and temperance. Nature creates a wealth of good things that lead to vibrant health. Pure water, fresh air and sunlight—when used appropriately—promote clean, healthy lives.
In the Bible, the process of deciding what will happen to us after our life here on earth is called the Judgment. God does this to honor our freedom of choice by examining our hearts, setting apart those who choose Him from those who do not.
Adventists embrace the significance of all the spiritual gifts, including prophecy, recognizing anyone can be used in this way if so moved by the Holy Spirit. what is the significance of the Bible prophecy Mark of the Beast i.e. 666.
Seventh-day Adventist Churches are located in 235 countries and areas of the world as recognized by the United Nations ( Summary of Statistics as of December 31, 2018 – https://www.adventistarchives.org/quick-statistics-on-the-seventh-day-adventist-church)
The global Church is organized with a representative form of church government. This means authority in the Church comes from the membership of local churches. Executive responsibility is given to representative bodies and officers to govern the Church. Four levels of Church structure lead from the individual believer to the worldwide Church organization:
The local church is made up of individual believers
The local conference, or local field/mission, is made up of a number of local churches in a state, province, or territory
The union conference, or union field/mission, is made up of conferences or fields within a larger territory (often a grouping of states or a whole country)
The General Conference, the most extensive unit of organization, is made up of all unions/entities in all parts of the world. Divisions are sections of the General Conference, with administrative responsibility for particular geographical areas.
Seventh-day Adventists believe that healthy lifestyle and spiritual growth are important components to the total development of the Christian person. To this end Adventists believe the key to wellness lies in a life of balance and temperance. Nature creates a wealth of good things that lead to vibrant health. Pure water, fresh air and sunlight—when used appropriately—promote clean, healthy lives. As Adventists grew from their grassroots beginnings into an organized global church, they found it particularly meaningful to apply biblical principles of conduct and compassion in the areas of health and well-being, stewardship, mission, and evangelism.
Seventh-day Adventists beliefs are inclusive of the total person. This is Heart, Body and Mind. Its beliefs encompasses the total person - Heart (behavior and personality) , Body (health and wellbeing) and Mind (education). To this end the Adventist church has the second-largest Christian school system in the world, with more than 7,500 schools in nearly 150 countries serving 1.5 million students. Local schools operate under the umbrella of Adventist education, so even the smallest schools are part of a worldwide network of dedicated educators and Bible-based curriculum.
"Tell the World" shares the compelling story of a small group of farmers from the northeast region of the United States who would go on to set the foundation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Since the 19th century, the Church has been at the forefront of matters relating to health, education, communication, and Biblical interpretation.
